Are you wondering "How do I start a company?"
If you are asking yourself how to start a company, I challenge to ask you why?
There are many benefits of running a company rather than a business, but they do come at a cost. Many people will complicate their ideas and how they want to implement them. It is important to understand there is a difference between your long term plan, and what you are best to do right now.
The biggest obstacle for people who are starting out is perfection!
We get so locked into the grand plan, we forget about the steps to get there.
If you are thinking about how to start up a company, please reach out for a free coffee or online insights and review chat. We will quickly understand if you should be starting a company, or would be better initially operating as a sole trader, or partnership.
Please call me on 048 11 99 606 or email; mike@bizbuildnoosa.com.au if you cannot find an answer to your question. Better still, book a free insights and review session with me, where I can answer all of your questions.
Ideas are the foundation, but business is about strategy and implementation. It does not matter how great your idea is, you still need to do the work (sorry!)
The good news is that if you follow some basic steps, some are outlined on this page, that will get you started.
Many people with great ideas do not start because they are; waiting for the right time, wanting to get it just right before taking it to market, are worried about the risk or do not know how to transition from paid employment to self-employment.
These are all things we can discuss. As a Sunshine Coast business coach we can catch up for a coffee, or if remote an online chat. You will quickly understand if it is worth pursuing your idea and some options to do so.
A Sole trader can run multiple businesses under one ABN. It is fast and easy. You do not have the same level of personal protection as you do under a company structure, but a lot of risk can be reduced by having the right insurance. You submit business income on your personal tax return. It is easy and cheap.
You pay for a business name around $100 for three years. The ABN is free. Do not register with a third party who can charge around $300 for three years for the same thing!
A Partnership needs a simple business partnership agreement and may require separate tax return. It needs a TFN for the Partnership. Partnerships are slightly more complex than a sole trader, and the risk is held by all parties. Again Insurance is critical.
A Company structure is much safer from a legal perspective but is more costly to set up. It also needs a tax return and other administrative requirements each year.
Trusts can also be used when building a company structure. These can be beneficial, especially if turn over is high. You will need to discuss this with a solicitor or other specialist.
As a business, if you earn less than $75000 per year, you do not need to collect GST. This makes your service 10% cheaper than some competitors! It also means you do not need to log a BAS statement, which reduces cost and hassle.
You just keep track of ALL expenses and income, even if you are not sure if you can claim them, that is the Tax accountants’ job.
Not-for-profits, taxis and some others have different GST rules. Please consult your Tax accountant for advice.
